Home made granola with oats, flax and quinoa
Method
Almost everyone I know has some sort of cereal for breakfast. Some absolutely love the kind of cereal they have...some are in search of the perfect cereal that they could have. I have the perfect solution to this....Home made granola. It is the perfect solution because you can tailor it to suit your likes and dislikes and also you control what is in the cereal...you can make it such that it is perfectly healthy - with no high fructose corn syrup or preservatives. The incentive - its tasty and making it is nothing but stirring together ingredients..
I have eliminated the use of white sugar and instead used alternatives such as maple syrup and honey. For the granola itself I used rolled oats, rolled barley, flax seeds and quinoa, along with a mixture of dry fruits and nuts. Feel free to improvise...to suit your tastes and availability.
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
Stir all of the above ingredients together in a bowl with a fork. Line a baking sheet with foil and spray with cooking spray. Lay the mixture in a single layer on the sheet and bake for about 25-30 minutes.
Remove, let cool and store in an airtight container for upto a month, in the fridge if longer. This amount barely lasts me a week...So, make double/triple batches if you really like it. :)
Verdict: Nutty, crunchy, fruity and sweet. This beats all store bought granola that I have ever tasted. The oats and barley flakes when coated with the honey and toasted in the oven become so tasty, that I end up snacking on this even during the day. Which is not so bad, since it really is healthy. :)
Sending this to 'CWF - Oats' event, series by Kiran.
